A few months ago, a patient came in for a check-up.
She was doing everything she could to be healthy—
eating whole foods, exercising, sleeping better, managing stress.
But something still wasn’t clicking.
Her focus was fading.
Her energy was low.
And despite her healthy habits, her weight kept creeping up.
We talked through her story and decided to check her labs.
The results told the deeper story:
blood sugar climbing,
iron low,
inflammation high,
and early signs of perimenopause.
We made a plan—just a few small, targeted adjustments personalized to her body.
At her follow-up, she was glowing.
Her energy was up.
Her focus had sharpened.
Her metabolism was improved.
And most importantly, she felt like herself again—strong, clear, and ready for what’s next.
That’s the power of personalization.
When you stop guessing and start listening to what your body’s data is telling you, even small shifts can create big change.

Each body tells a different story.
What heals one person may not be what another needs.
The truth is simple:
You don’t know what you don’t know.
You might be doing everything “right”—
eating clean, moving daily, sleeping well—
and still be missing something essential.
You could be low in a key nutrient.
Or over-supplementing with something you don’t actually need.
Both deficiency and excess can cause harm.
And you’d never know it without testing.
Labs reveal whether what you’re doing is actually working.
They turn guesswork into guidance.
You can start with basic labs.
Or go deeper for a full picture of your nutrient status, inflammation, hormones, and metabolic health.
Either way, testing is how we move from “I think I’m healthy” to “I know I am.”
And that’s the foundation of true optimization.
The Core Labs I Check
Here’s a look at the markers that help me—and my patients—see what’s really going on.
1. Basic Labs
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): liver, kidney, electrolytes, protein, albumin
CBC: red and white blood cells, anemia, platelets, bone marrow health
A quick snapshot of how your “engine” is running.
2. Nutrient Panel
Are you getting what you need—and actually absorbing it?
I look at:
B12 and homocysteine (amount and function)
Magnesium
Zinc
Iron
Vitamin D
Iodine
Selenium
Omega-3 fatty acids
Even with a clean diet, stress, gut issues, soil depletion, and absorption problems can shift your nutrient balance.
Sometimes we find deficiencies.
Other times, excess.
Testing keeps you from guessing—or overdoing it.
3. Inflammatory Markers
Low-grade inflammation is often silent.
You might feel fine, but your data can tell a different story.
Because low grade inflammation increases the risk of chronic diseases and poor aging. With proper adjustments and root cause analysis, inflammation can be tamed.
Markers I check:
hs-CRP
ESR
Uric acid
Ferritin (also a marker of oxidative stress)
Autoimmune panels, if needed
4. Advanced Cardiovascular Labs
We go far beyond total cholesterol.
Advanced testing shows how your lipids behave—whether they’re inflamed, oxidized, or putting stress on your arteries.
Key markers:
ApoB
Lipoprotein(a)
LDL particle number and size
Lp-PLA2
Oxidized LDL
Genetic markers, if indicated
Together, these paint a more accurate picture of your heart and vascular health.
5. Hormone Health
Hormones are a web—interconnected and dynamic.
When one hormone shifts, the rest are affected as well.
I check:
Thyroid panel
Insulin
Cortisol
Estrogen
Progesterone
Testosterone
6. Metabolic Markers
These reveal how your body handles sugar and energy—
and whether you’re insulin-sensitive or resistant.
Fasting glucose
Insulin
Hemoglobin A1C
They often pick up early shifts years before symptoms appear. Optimizing metabolic health is essential for preventing and reversing chronic illness and for healthy aging.
7. Other Tests (as needed)
Genetic testing
Microbiome mapping
Heavy metal and toxin screening
Personalized, Not One-Size-Fits-All
Two people can eat the same food, sleep the same hours, and do the same workouts—
and get completely different results.
Why?
Because biology isn’t identical.
Your microbiome, detox pathways, hormones, inflammation patterns, and even how your liver enzymes function are unique to you.
That’s why personalization matters.
You might be doing everything right—
but your body might be asking for something different.
The Bottom Line
Feeling good is wonderful.
It means you’re on the right path.
But if you want to move from good to thriving, it’s time to go deeper.
Test, don’t guess.
Use your data as a guide.
Correct small imbalances before they grow.
That’s the fun part of functional medicine—
becoming the detective of your own health.
Because lasting health isn’t about perfection.
It’s about knowing your body, personalizing your path, and enjoying the ride.
